“… one day the girl gets some apples and carves some little men out of these apples, all little fingers, little eyes, little toes, and she gives them to her father but she says to him they’re not to be eaten, they’re to be kept as a memento of when his only daughter was young, and naturally the pig of a father swallows a bunch of these applemen whole, just to spite her, and they have razor blades in them, and he dies in agony.”
A writer in a totalitarian state is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a number of child murders that are happening In his town. The Pillowman is a deliciously dark play which questions the dangerous power of literature and whether the only duty of a storyteller is to tell a story.
Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman played to critical acclaim at the National Theatre, London (Olivier Award Winner) and New York (Tony nominee). Other plays include The Beauty Queen of Leenane , The Cripple of Inishmaan and Tony nominees The Lonesome West and The Lieutenant of Inishmore. His short film Six Shooter won a 2006 Academy Award and he won a BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay for In Bruges in 2008.
